GMC:hen you are researching a car or a truck
20th December 2010

hen you are researching a car or a truck to buy … what is the first thing that you do? Well, the first thing that I do is look at the name – then I look at the specs and I think that the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is by far one of the best named trucks on the market and as for the specs? Well, those are going to be described below!
T Raptor is one of the only trucks in the world that seems pretty standard; however it is anything but standard. The price is just under $40,000 and while that seems like a lot, it truly isn’t. The fact that it has a 5.4-liter V8 engine along with 310 HP is nothing to sneeze at. Also, come winter, it has an uprated 400 HP and a 6.2-liter V8 engine that you can upgrade too …
The greatest thing about this
With the mighty Veyron scheduled to end production, Bugatti couldn’t put the beast to pasture as second best, so it built a better one: the 1200 horseponeers attacked the Veyron’s 8-litre W16 engine with larger turbos (the Veyron has four of them), intercoolers and revised its engine tuning to give it an extra 146 kilowatts and a total of 1500Nm of torque. The company also gave the vehicle’s chassis and suspension upgrades to handle the increased power and g-forces, as well as an improved aerodynamics kit.
For reasons only the good folk at Bugatti know, it also slathered the bottom half and wheels of the vehicle with a few tins of retina-searing orange paint. When the dust settled, the 882kW monster was put in the hands of French racing driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel, who averaged a Guinness Record grabbing 431km/h over two runs at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessen proving grounds in Germany.
Bugatti will electronically limit production versions of the Super Sport to 415km/h to keep customers from disintegrating the tyres at ludicrous speed. However, that’s still 3km/h faster than the Ultimate Aero TT, so the record of world’s fastest production car will still belong to Bugatti — for now, at least.wer (882kW), record-shatterin
evealed the ever-so-slightly bonkers headline act to its current 911 crop, the GT2 RS. Stripped and almost race ready, but also somehow road legal as well, the GT2 RS features a turbocharged engine with extra dollops of power and torque, a lighter body and a steroid fed exterior.
The engine is Porsche’s familiar 3.6-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder unit; it’s boosted by two turbos and pumps out 456kW of power and 700Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox — no namby-pamby automatics or dual-clutch transmie enough racetrack you can reach 330km/h, while ceramic brakes bring the whole thing to a halt. Despite the performance increase, fuel consumption is down 5 per cent from the superseded GT2 to 11.9L/100km and CO2 emissions are cut to 284g/km.
Local base specifications have yet to be set, but the car will be offered overseas with Porsche’s CDR-30 audio system, which can be optioned up to include a USB port for MP3 players, iPhones and USB sticks. Other audio options include a nine-speaker 235W stereo system and satellite navigation with Bluetooth hands-free.
Naturally, you could go completely without and save a few extra kilos, after all that’s what the GT2 RS is all about. To shave weight to a scant 1370kg, Porsche’s engineers have removed most of the 911’s sound-deadssions here. Nail your clutch and ge

pt for the Active model and you’ll get six airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, stability control, auto headlights, fog lamps, LED tail-lights, cruise control, rear-seat air vents and a six-speaker sound system, with an iPod-compatible USB port and steering wheel controls. The Elite model gains full leather upholstery, 17-inch alloys, climate control, rear-parking sensors and rain-sensing wipersrange Premium version comes with a panorama sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, and an up-specced audio system with a subwoofer, six-stack CD player and multi-line audio display. Bluetooth hands-free is a dealer-fitted accessory throughout the range, but satellite navigation isn’t available at any price.
Initially, all Australian-bound i45s will feature a 2.4-litre petrol engine sending 148kW of power and 250Nm of torque to the front wheels. A six-speed automatic is present throughout the i45 range, with a six-speed manual.

or a more powerful version of the lighter 2.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the GTI. As used in the R, the motor puts out 188kW of power and 330Nm of torque, besting both the current
To get all this power to ground, the R is fitted with a four-wheel drive system. It can sprint from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds; the GTI takes a lazy 6.9 seconds. In official testing, the R’s fuel consumption is cut from 10.9L/100km to dard equipment on the Golf R includes seven airbags, two-zone climate control, parking sensors with optical display, self-dimming mirrors and rain-sensing wipers. The sound system is an eight-speaker unit with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, steering wheel controls, auxiliary jack, SD card slot and six-disc CD stacker, although Bluetooth hands-free and USB for direct iPod control are unfortunately extra cost options. Also on the options list is sat nav, reversing camera, leather upholstery and electric

he ix35 is the first car to emerge from Hyundai to show off the company’s new “fluidic design” philosophy and judging from the ix35, i45 sedan and upcoming Elantra-replacement the company’s on to a good thing. With its rounded shape, swooping roof, characteristic slashes and interesting details, the ix35 is the best-looking compact four-wheel drive.
On the aesthetics front the only complaint we have is of the garish chrome grille trim on the Elite and Highlander models, limb aboard the ix35 and it’s clear that Hyundai’s designers have upped the standard of their work here too. The dashboard is a pleasing combination of swooshes, pods and faux metal highlights. The neon blue interior lighting is funky, but it can be a bit trying on the eyes, even at its lowest intensity.
Although the cabin feels well made the plastics are hard. Only the Highlander gains full leather upholstery, but on our review car that had just over 10,000km on the clock, the driver’s seat was already beginning to look sad and saggy. Driving comfort is hampered somewhat by the lack of steering wheel reacwhich seems to go against the grain of the rest of the car. Thankfully, light coloured i
With such polarising looks, the Soul is intended as a statement of intent rather than a model that turns up in the top sellers’ list. Indeed, the Soul was the car used by Kia to mark the company’s emergence from a purveyor of cars bought purely on their sticker price alonehe Soul isn’t quite as versatile. The rear seats split-fold, but don’t lie flat and the boot has a high lip that makes heavy items tiresome to load. As partial compensation there’s a set of storage compartments underneath the boot floor; below this hidey-hole is a space-saver spare wheel.
There’s a multitude of uncovered storage spaces, including two cup holders and four bottle holders, dotted around the Soul’s cabin. In addition to these are a bi-level glovebox and a rather tricky to open cubby for glasses. It’s clear that the designers have spent some time finessing the details in the cabin, as the dashboard is logically laid out and pleasingly designed right down to matching plastic grain on various bits of trim. Our car came complete with a two-tone colour scheme, the only downside of which were t.

Ever since the first A8 graced the world’s roads in 1994, the range-topping Audi’s body has been made from lighter, but more expensive, aluminium rather than steel. With a 4.2-litre V8 sitting under the bonnet the A8 weighs 1835kg. This isn’t svelte in an absolute sense, but is a significant amount lighter than the BMW 750i at 1945kg and Mercedes-Benz S500 at 1955kg. Bear in mind, though, that the Audi’s competitors are rear-wheel drive, while the Audi comudi isn’t big on bling, but the big chrome grille, and LED driving lights and turn indicators make the A8 instantly recognisable, especially at night. LEDs also grace the tail-light and folding wing mirrors. The car’s standard xenon headlights can be replaced by lights that can switch automatically between standard and high beam. Neither headlight option swivels with the steering wheel to help illuminate turns, although the adaptive headlight system does adjust beam range and automatically engages cornering lights as required.
All four doors and the boot softly pull themselves shut when they’re left slightly ajar. So you’ll never drive off with the car softly chiming away. It goes without saying that keyless entry and start are standard, but
